I am not quite as optimistic as John Gruber in this. I do think we need AI regulation and that it will be a big problem in the next few years.
Regulation for Thee, but Not for Me
I’m optimistic about many of the benefits it will bring and I actually think Open AI and Sam Altman have been saying a lot of good things about the dangers as well as curbing some expectations or what AI can to. But it seems to me like allowing these companies to help write the regulations would be like asking tobacco companies how they should be regulated. Or asking oil companies what they think about environmental protections.
Yes, I know big companies lobby their way in to these all the time, but it’s hard to see any good outcomes that has ever had. Unfortunately it’s a broken process in a broken system.
